CONFIDENCE IS A CON
So…you think you don’t have what you want because you lack confidence.
Your dreams don’t come true because you never feel 💯 certain that
✨ you are the person for the job
✨ others support you
✨ and the universe is conspiring on you behalf.
And this persistent lack of feeling is responsible for your current state of “failure.”
So you do things like
💃🏻 journal affirmations,
💃🏻 power pose,
💃🏻 and master an amazing skincare routine
to create the feeling of confidence.
And meanwhile, you still aren’t
❎ writing your NYTimes bestseller
❎ pitching your Pulitzer Prize winning article
❎ or making your craft worthy of Oscar buzz.
Now, there is nothing wrong with doing things that make you feel good.
I LOVE a weekend bath.
But what shifts when you accept that even successful people don’t feel confident 24/7?
During this month’s U.S. Open, I think about the very first match between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams in 2018. At that time, Naomi had only her first professional title win. Meanwhile Serena, back from maternity leave, was an Olympic gold medalist, won 23 grand slams in singles, and even won an Open while pregnant.
Who do you think won?
And was the determining factor how their confidence compared?
Six months later, Naomi would beat Serena *again* in the US Open Finals to win her first Grand Slam.
Hearing the boo’s in a stadium of Serena fans, you wouldn’t characterize Naomi as “confident”. On the awards stage, she cried, hid under her visor, and said, “I know everyone was cheering for her [Serena] and I’m sorry it had to end like this.”
The person who has the life they want isn’t the one who feels confident.
It is the one who keeps going even when they don’t.
Confidence isn’t the cause of your success.
✨YOU ARE✨
